The ESA Council has worked hard to set the program for a busy year
ahead. A Sponsorship Committee has been formed to co-ordinate and
consolidate approaches to industry for corporate support and sponsorship
of the Society’s educational and scientific meetings. The Committee
will be chaired by Cathie Coulter. Members will include Ken Ho,
Bruce Robinson, Patricia Crock (Chair, Seminar Committee), Leon
Bach (Chair, Program Committee), Judith Clements (Chair, LOC for
Annual Scientific Meeting 2001) and David Torpy (Convenor, Clinical
Weekend 2001). Patricia Crock has put together an exciting program
for the Seminar meeting in Newcastle, April 20–22, 2001. Organisation
for this year’s Annual Meeting at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast,
from September 9–12, is well on the way. The ESA and SRB will be
meeting with the ADS, ADEA and ASSO. The Clinical Weekend will be
held in association with APEG at the Nara Resort, Seaworld. Prof
Jack Martin has accepted the Society’s invitation to be this year’s
Harrison Lecturer.
The ESA has
continued discussions, initiated last year, with the Japan Endocrine
Society (JES) about ways to strengthen ties between the two Societies
through a program of speaker exchange at scientific meetings. For
the second year in a row, the JES extended an invitation to the
ESA to send 2 scientists to their Summer Seminar. The ESA has put
forward Drs Ray Rodgers and Judith Clements this year and will look
into ways of developing this joint venture with a view of establishing
an ESA-JES exchange speakers program for its future Annual Scientific
Meetings.
Profs John Funder
and Evan Simpson have been nominated to stand on Council of the
US Endocrine Society. This is the first time that scientists outside
North America have been nominated to the Council of the Endocrine
Society. This reflects the reputation and standing of Profs Funder
and Simpson in the international endocrine community. I call on
ESA members of the Endocrine Society to exercise their voting right
appropriately.
