ESA Clinical Weekend 20–22 September 2002

The Clinical Weekend meeting of the ESA is a highlight of the Society’s clinical activities during the year and has become a “must-not- miss” function for clinical endocrinologists and for trainees. It has a proven record for delivering up-to-date evidenced based opinions about endocrine practice in a relaxed setting providing optimal opportunities for learning.

The format of the meeting will be case-based to encourage maximum interaction between participants. Individual experience and opinion will be supplemented by objective review of the literature in specific areas and by expert opinion. There will be sessions on specific medico-legal questions including serious motor vehicle accident after hypoglycaemia and breast cancer associated with HRT. The program will also include discussion of guidelines for long term follow-up of chronic treated endocrine conditions such as Acromegaly, Polycystic ovary disease, Addison’s disease and thyroid cancer. Advanced trainees in endocrinology are particularly encouraged to offer suitable cases for presentation and review.

Professor Paul Stewart from the University of Birmingham, an enthusiastic clinical scientist, will be a vigorous contributor.

Time will be set aside for trainees and supervisors to discuss training issues including State selection into advanced training, supervisor accreditation, endocrine modules and part time opportunities.

In keeping with tradition the annual Endocrine Trivial Pursuit will feature at the Friday dinner. The Saturday afternoon will be devoted to golf, tennis, wine tours and other forms of relaxation.

The meeting will be held at the Novotel Resort in the Barossa Valley which even parochial Victorian members will recognise as one of the best wine growing areas in the world. The resort is new and ideally set up with studio and two bedroom apartments having balconies with panoramic views. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool, health club, tennis court, bike hire, a kids club and an 18 hole golf course. Special discounts and high level MOPS accreditation have been negotiated. The Organising Committee encourages all members to pencil in the dates of what will be a memorable and educational event.
