April 2002 SIGNIFICANT
MEMBER HONOURS John
W Funder AO The
Endocrine Society of Australia was excited and pleased to learn that the prestigious
Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Service Award of The Endocrine Society (USA) for
2002 has been awarded to John W. Funder, AO. Funder
(as he insists his friends call him) has certainly been an outstanding servant
of Australian and international endocrinology and science, while at the same time
carving out a fantastically successful career as a scientist, mentor and administrator.
He has served the ESA as councilor, Treasurer, Secretary and President, and has
been instrumental in the activities of the Australian Society for Medical Research.
He has been director of the Baker Institute for Medical Research and is Chairman
of VicHealth. On the international scene, Funder has served as member of the executive
of the International Society for Endocrinology and is a member of the council
of The Endocrine Society (USA).
These roles describe only a small part of his service to the Australian and international
community. The Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Service Award is presented in recognition
of distinguished service in the field of endocrinology, and ESA can think of no
better description of the professional life of John Funder. Congratulations, and
thank you on behalf of the Australian endocrine and medical science community. Professor
