ESA Mid-Career Research Award **NEW**
The ESA is pleased to announce a new Mid-Career Researcher Award,
designed to recognise an outstanding mid-career researcher in endocrinology.
The award comprises a plaque and 20-minute lecture at the Annual
Scientific Meeting, and complimentary meeting registration.
Eligible applicants are active ESA members with five to 12 years’ research
experience post-higher degree (PhD, MD or FRACP) at the deadline
of application (exceptions can be made for career interruptions).
The winner must attend the ASM to present their lecture. The award
will be made by a selection committee comprising the ESA Council
members and the Chair of the ESA POC.
Applicants will be notified at
the close of abstract submissions for the ASM (19 June 2009), and
the winner will
be asked
to provide an abstract for their lecture within three weeks of
notification, to be included in the ASM Proceedings.
The ESA encourages
all eligible members to apply for this new award.

Novartis Junior Scientist Award
The Novartis
Junior Scientist Award is given for the best presentation at
the Annual Scientific Meeting by an advanced trainee or a person
enrolled
for a higher degree (PhD, MD, FRACP). Nominees must be members
of the
Endocrine Society of Australia. Applicants will be judged initially
on the
basis of their Abstracts and a short list of applicants will be
chosen to
present in a special session. Applicants will be informed of the
session in
which they are to present when acceptances of Abstracts are sent
out.
In addition
to submitting their abstract to the above address
(ESA-SRB@asnevents.net.au),
applicants should email their abstract, a brief
CV and a supporting letter from their supervisor as attachments

Servier
Young Investigator Award
The Servier
Award is made annually to recognise the best scientific
paper published in the 12-month period preceding the closing date
for
abstracts for the Annual Scientific Meeting by an active member
of the
Endocrine Society of Australia early in their career.
The award is
given for a single publication although up to two
additional papers may be submitted in support of the application.
Eligibility:
Society members who are within 8 years of having obtained
a higher
degree or diploma (i.e. PhD, MD, FRACP) and who are currently financial.
Regulations:
- The Servier
Young Investigator Award is made by a subcommittee of
Council consisting of the President, Treasurer and Secretary.
- The award
will be presented at the dinner associated with the Annual Scientific
Meeting to which the awardee is invited and expected to attend.
- The value
of the award supported by Servier Laboratories Australia is
$1000.
- The deadline
for applications is the same as that for abstracts to the Annual
Scientific Meeting.
- The application
must be sponsored by a financial member of the Society who may
write a letter in support of the application.
- Work submitted
for publication, but not yet accepted for publication is not eligible
for the award.
- The work
must have been performed predominantly in Australia.
- The applicant
should submit a statement from the department head, or head of
research group, signed by all co-authors, which outlines the applicant's
role in
- Planning
the design of the work
- Experimental
and analytical work
- Writing
and revision.
- The winner must attend the meeting and give a lecture.
- The subcommittee
has a duty to apply the criteria equitably to all applicants.

work is 'in press', written documentation of final acceptance
must be provided.

Clinical Endocrinology Award
The
ESA / CSL / Bryan Hudson Clinical
Endocrinology Award will recognize
the best clinical research presentation
at the Annual Scientific Meeting by
an active member of the Endocrine Society
of Australia early in their career.
It will be made on an annual basis.
Eligibility:
Society members who are less than
45 years of age, or are within 10 years
of obtaining professional qualifications
and who are current financial members of
at least 12 months standing.
Regulations:
- Applicants
for the award will submit an abstract
for presentation at the Annual Scientific
Meeting of ESA. The Program Organising
Committee of ESA will select up to
six (6) abstracts as finalists for
oral presentation at a special session
of the Annual Scientific Meeting.
- A
subcommittee of Council consisting
of the President, Treasurer, Secretary,
or their delegates will judge the
quality of the finalist presentations.
The award will be presented at the
dinner associated with the Annual
Scientific Meeting to which all the
finalists will be invited and expected
to attend.
- The
value of the award supported by Mayne
Pharma Australia is $3500.
- The
deadline for applications is the
same as that for abstracts to the
Annual Scientific Meeting.
- The
work must be performed predominantly
in Australia.
- The
applicant
should submit a statement signed
by all co-authors, which outlines
the applicant’s role in planning
the design of the project, experimental
and analytical work, writing and revision.
- The
applicant must spend the stipend
in the advancement of clinical endocrine
research, with the proposed expenditure
being approved by the ESA Council.
- The
subcommittee has a duty to apply
the criteria equitably to all applicants.

ESA / IPSEN International
Travel Grant Award
The following information is also available in the ESA

Aim:
To support younger members of the society to travel to international
meetings, laboratories and/or clinics to further their training
and knowledge in Endocrinology.
Awards:
- One award of $3500 will be granted to assist with
the costs of international travel to a Eurpoean destination. Deadline:
1 March 2009

All travel for the awards to take place within 9
months of the award deadline.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants
must have been financial members of ESA for at least 12
months prior to the closing date for applications.
- FRACP Advanced Trainees not enrolled in a higher degree are eligible,
but all other applicants must possess a higher
degree (MD or PhD), and be within 5 years of the award
of that degree, or be currently enrolled in a higher degree by
research program.
- Applicants must be attending a recognized meeting of a learned
society or organization within the general field of Endocrinology.
- All travel for the ESA/IPSEN awards to take place within 9 months of
the award deadline.
- Each applicant can only apply once for each meeting.
- Previous winners of this award will be ineligible to reapply for
2 years.
Preference will be given to applicants who meet the following
additional criteria:
- who are giving a presentation at the meeting they wish
to attend;
- who will visit a laboratory(ies) and/or clinic(s) associated
with their field of endocrinology;
- who are active members of the
society as evidenced by attendance and presentation at the
Annual Scientific Meeting and other activities;
Compensation:
Compensation will be given for those
applicants who have spent periods outside the workforce (due to
illness,
family leave etc). In these cases the criterion of 5 (five) years
fulltime
equivalence will be applied, and the applicant must verify their
absence from the workforce in the application.
Applications:
Applications are to be submitted electronically by email to
the ESA Secretariat by the deadline. The application should include:
- a covering
letter outlining the proposed
itinerary and what benefits the applicant intends to obtain
from the travel,
- a letter of support from their supervisor (who
preferably
is a member of the Society), details of the meeting they
wish to attend (including submitted abstracts), details of the
laboratories/clinics
they wish to visit (including letters of invitation,
where appropriate), and
- a brief CV (highlighting degrees, awards
and
published works).
Where
an applicant is claiming the consideration of an extension of
the time from the award of a higher degree (see eligibility
criteria), they should provide supporting evidence of their reason
for extension.

Selection:
A panel comprising the President, President-Elect, Honorary
Secretary and Treasurer shall rank the applicants using the above
criteria. If any member of the panel is unavailable, the council

Australian
Women in Endocrinology (AWE)
2009 Travel Awards
Purpose: To provide financial support to younger
women involved in Endocrine-related training and/or research who
are presenting
an abstract at the ENDO Meeting in Washington, DC, USA June 10-13th
2009 (ENDO2009
website).
Eligibility: Preference is given to Postdoctoral trainees
(first three years) and PhD students in their 3rd or 4th year
of training
at an Australian or New Zealand-based Institution. Depending
upon sponsorship levels, applications will be considered from Post-Doctoral
Trainees up to 5 years and PhD students.
Applicants must be the
presenting author on an abstract accepted for presentation at
the
Endocrine Society meeting (USA).
Applicants must be current members
of the Australasian Branch of Women in Endocrinology, with either
financial membership of the ESA or NZSE.

Eligibility:
 
ESA Postdoctoral Award
Conditions of award
The purpose of the Award is for research in any area of endocrinology
by recent post-doctoral scientists. The research must be conducted
in Australia.
At the conclusion of the recipient’s study, the recipient
must submit his/her research findings for presentation at the Endocrine
Society of Australia annual scientific meeting.
Eligibility
The postdoctoral fellow must be a member of the ESA and can have
either a clinical or basic science qualification.
Applicants may have already commenced their postdoctoral studies.
Postdoctoral fellows must be less than 5 years since graduating
from a PhD. Academic transcript detailing date of PhD or MD graduation
must be provided.
Applicants will not be eligible for an Award if they do not have
ethics approval for the project. Evidence of ethics approval must
be provided by the time of commencement of the award.
Selection Criteria
Applicants will be assessed on;
- Track record: publications or abstracts, awards and achievements,
extra curricular expertise such as scientific membership, administrative
expertise, work experience in research
- Project proposal assessed
on scientific quality, relevance to endocrinology and clinical
and scientific impact
Tenure
The award is for a period of two years, conditional on a satisfactory
progress report 12 months into the Award. A 12 monthly report
will be required for each year of tenure and is due on the 30th
November each year. The report must be emailed to the ESA Secretariat
esa@racp.edu.au
Following completion of the project, a full report is
to be submitted to ESA Council by 31 January with copies of publications and abstracts
included.
Awardees must attend the ESA Annual Scientific Meeting each year
of tenure.

Application Form.
Applications must be accompanied by:

The names of two referees who can comment on the personal, clinical
and scientific suitability of the candidate. It is
the applicant’s

where the research will be conducted, indicating the availability
of suitable facilities
and scientific support
- A letter from the relevant Ethics Committee
confirming approval for the proposed project. The ethics approval
may be pending
at the time of application but the scholarship will not be awarded
until a certificate of ethics approval is provided to the ESA
secretariat.
Applications are assessed by a Selection Committee
selected by ESA Council.

Administration of the Scholarship
The award recipient must be undertaking work within a hospital,
university department, research institute or other approved institute.
The financial administration of the award will be through the
appropriate finance office of the institution.
Stipend and allowances
For the Postdoctoral award, the annual stipend will be $25 000.
This will be used at the awardees’ discretion for either
salary support or research expenses. Publications
Any publications (papers or conference abstracts) derived from
the project must acknowledge the financial support of the Endocrine
Society of Australia
 
ESA Research Higher Degree Scholarship
Conditions of award
The purpose of the Scholarship is for research in any area of endocrinology.
The research must be conducted in Australia.
At the conclusion of the recipient’s study, the recipient
must submit his/her research findings for presentation at the Endocrine
Society of Australia annual scientific meeting.
Eligibility
The principal supervisor of the research higher degree (RHD) student
must be a member of the ESA (i.e. Fellows and Members). The
principal supervisor can only submit one PhD or MD application
per year. RHD
students can have either a clinical or basic science qualification
and
be eligible
for entry into a PhD or MD program. Awardees must join ESA when
accepting the award.
Applicants may have already commenced their higher degree and
be in the first year of study when applying. Academic transcript
detailing
date of enrolment must be provided. Funding will only be provided
for 2 years if the applicant is in the second year of the higher
degree program when accepting the award.
Applicants will not be eligible for an ESA scholarship
if they are awarded or presently hold a scholarship such as an
APA
or Dora Lush scholarship or scholarship from a private foundation
such as the Asthma Foundation.
Applicants will not be eligible for an ESA scholarship
if they do not have ethics approval for the project.
Tenure
The Scholarship is for a period of three years, conditional on
a satisfactory progress report 12 months into the Scholarship.
A 12 monthly report will be required for each year of the scholarship
tenure and is due on the 30th November each year. The report
must include a submission from the Principal supervisor confirming
student progress. The report must be emailed to the ESA Secretariat esa@racp.edu.au
Following completion of the project, a full report is to be submitted
to the Research Foundation by 31 January with copies of publications
and abstracts included. This report will be reviewed by the Board
of Directors and the Scholarship Selection Committee.
Awardees must attend the ESA Annual Scientific Meeting each year
of tenure.

Pfizer Australia Paediatric Endocrine Care Research
Grants
(APEC Research Grants)
Grants of up to $55,000 (incl. GST) to be awarded
in 2009
This Pfizer Australia Research Grants program is open
to medical graduates who have obtained specialist qualifications
within
the last five years, or are currently in advanced training.
Applications will also be considered on a case by case basis from
graduates
returning to research after an appropriate break.
Applications are welcome from medical graduates who are currently
residing, working and conducting research within Australia. Grant
recipients must conduct the majority of the research project within
Australia.

(CVL Research Grants)
Grants of up to $55,000 (incl. GST) to
be awarded in 2009
The
Pfizer Australia Cardiovascular and Lipid Research Grants program
is looking for medical graduates who have entered the field of
research (or have returned to research after an appropriate break)
within the last 5 years. Applicants must be Australian citizens
or permanent residents and the majority of research must be conducted
within Australia. Research funding is awarded for clinical research
across the fields of (but not necessarily confined to):
