Award Winners for 2000
Novartis
Junior Scientist Award
Congratulations
to Jeremy Smith, winner of the 2000 Novartis Junior Award for the
best presentation by an Advanced Trainee or a person enrolled for
a higher degree (PhD, MD, FRACP) at the Annual Scientific Meeting
which was held in conjunction with the International Congress of
Endocrinology in Sydney. Jeremy is from the Department of Anatomy
and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia and received
this award unanimously for his paper entitled "Leptin receptor
expression in the rat hypothalamus increases during the peripubetal
period" co-authored with his supervisor, Associate Professor
Brendan Waddell. Applicants were judged initially from submitted
abstracts and 6 finalists were chosen. The other finalists were
Belinda Henry, Stephen McPherson, Ricky Lareu, Sharon Roughton and
Kayty Plastow.
Servier Award
Congratulations
to Dr Fraser Rogerson who is the winner of the 2000 Servier Award.
The annual award recognises the best scientific paper as judged
by a sub-committee of Council, published by an active Member of
the Endocrine Society of Australia, who is within 8 years of having
obtained a higher degree. Dr Rogerson is from the Prince Henry's
Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne and received the award
for his paper entitled "Structural Determinants of Aldosterone
Binding Selectivity in the Mineralocorticoid Receptor" co-authored
with Nektaria Dimopoulos, Pavel Sluka, Simon Chu, Andrea J Curtis
and Peter J Fuller, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry
(274:36305-36311, 1999). The results identify a sub-region of the
mineralocorticoid ligand binding domain that confers specificity
of aldosterone binding which contrasts with cortisol binding where
differential effects between chimeras appear to be mediated by interactions
distal to ligand binding. The committee considered the level to
be particularly high this year. Other applicants considered for
this award were Jeremy Smith from The University of Western Australia,
Renea Jarred and Moira O'Bryan both from the Monash Institute of
Reproduction and Development and Zee Upton from the Queensland University
of Technology. Because of ICE, Fraser was unable to present his
work to Members of the ESA. However, he will be invited to make
this presentation at the 2001 Annual Scientific Meeting in the Gold
Coast.
Serono Travel

Congratulations
to Dr Craig Munns from the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane
and to Dr Kristen Neville from the Sydney Children's Hospital on
being the recipients of a Serono Travel Award to attend the Serono
Symposium entitled "A Current Review of Paediatric Endocrinology"
in the USA in April 2001.
