Australasian
Branch of Women in Endocrinology Launched at ICE 2000
An Australasian
Branch of Women in Endocrinology (AWE) was launched at ICE 2000
with a reception held in the Skyline room in the Sydney Convention
& Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour. The evening was generously
supported by DSL-Australia and was a resounding success with over
100 attendees. At least half of attendees expressed their interest
in joining AWE, including Dr Susan Gale, the Managing Director of
DSL-Australia, who attended the evening and has given her promise
to support a similar event at the ESA Annual Scientific Meeting.
Louise McLaren, Product Manager, Novo Nordisk, also attended the
evening and has expressed a strong interest in supporting the AWE.
A number of ESA Council Members attended to wish us success with
the launch of this endeavour, including Ray Rodgers, Brendan Waddell,
and Ben Canny. Also a number of the Women in Endocrinology Committee
members attended, including the current President Maggie Wierman,
Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Weigel, and Committee members Linda Guidice,
Dolores Lamb, Agnes Schronbrunn and Past Office bearers, Selna Kaplan
and Mary Hunzicker Dunn.
I am pleased
to announce that two annual AWE Travel Grants will be available
from 2001. The DSL Travel Award and Novo Nordisk Travel Award will
provide financial support for young women trainees who are ESA or
NZSE members and enable them to present their work at the Annual
Scientific Meeting of the Endocrine Society (USA) and also attend
the Women in Endocrinology Dinner (held annually during the ENDO
conference). To be eligible for these awards of $1000 each, you
must be currently working in an Australian or New Zealand laboratory
and a trainee member of AWE in the 3rd or 4th year of your PhD,
or in the first 3
years of your Post-Doctoral
Fellowship (currently, there is no additional membership fee for AWE,
however, you must be a member of ESA or NZSE).
If you are interested
in joining AWE, applying for a Travel Award or being on an AWE Committee,
I would be happy to hear from you via e-mail at catherine.coulter@adelaide.edu.au
or at the Department of Physiology, University of Adelaide, SA Australia
