December 2000
From the
New President, Professor Ken Ho
I thank Ray
Rodgers and the previous Council for leaving the Society in a financially
healthy and scientifically vibrant state with a membership in excess
of 800. Ray has been an active and dynamic president who introduced
many administrative changes within the ESA, took an active interest
across all issues and played an effective role in galvanising the
efforts of the ESA and the local Organising Committee during the
preparation of ICE. Under Ray's leadership, the Society established
a Secretariat at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and
with Sonia Stanton oversaw the transfer of the archives of the Society
to the College for safekeeping. The Society has been active in matters
of policy and health by continuing to provide solicited advice to
relevant government bodies, and formulated position statements on
key areas of endocrine therapeutics. The Society can be proud to
have hosted the recent International Congress of Endocrinology which
was an outstanding success. I also thank the outgoing members of
Council, Jeffrey Zajac who served as Vice President and previous
Chair of the Program
Organising
Committee, and Roger Smith who has been Chair of the Seminar Committee.
Special thanks also to Moira Lewitt who resigned as Treasurer in
1999 to take up a position in Sweden and who assisted me in setting
up the Secretariat at the College.
I am fortunate
to lead a strong Council with Brendan Waddell as Vice President,
Ben Canny as Secretary and Cathie Coulter as Treasurer, along with
Ross Cuneo and Sonia Stanton whom I am delighted were re-elected.
I warmly welcome Bruce Robinson and Evan Simpson as new incoming
Council members. Each member will be contributing to specific areas
of ESA activities. Ross Cuneo will continue to oversee medical affairs;
Sonia Stanton will take over as Editor of the newsletter from Brendan
Waddell and will continue to oversee matters related to endocrine
training. Bruce Robinson will be handling matters related to the
Royal College of Physicians and Evan Simpson will have a major liaison
role to strengthen the ESA's scientific interaction with related
professional societies, both nationally and internationally. The
Council is delighted to be working with Leon Bach who is Chairman
of the Program Organising Committee and Judith Clements, Chairperson
of the LOC for the Annual Scientific Meeting 2001. Finally, I thank
Ivone Johnson for the tireless and tremendous secretarial support
she gives to the Society.
Ken Ho, ESA
President
