No ESA Scholarship or Post-Doctoral Awards in 2010
Regrettably, ESA Council has decided that the Society
is not in a position to offer new Higher Degree or Post-Doctoral
awards to commence in 2010. The awards are funded from income of the
Society's
investments and the global financial crisis has altered our
funding projections for 2010. However, the 3-year awards that commenced
in
2008 and 2009 will still be supported, and we hope to be
able to offer new awards to commence in 2011.
Information about these awards is located on the Awards
& Grants page.

Pituitary Special Interest Group
The Neurosurgical Society of Australasia has developed a Pituitary Special
Interest Group, which will act a a forum for presentations and discussions
regarding education and research. It will act as a forum for communication
with international cognate societies, and it will help organise meetings
and sessions, usually in conjunction with either meetings of the Neurosurgical
Society of Australasia or international pituitary groups and societies.
The group is very keen to include interested members from other specialties,
in particular, endocrinology, neuropathology and neuro-ophthalmology.
I have agreed to act as an Interim Convenor of the group, and I would
be delighted if you would participate in the Pituitary Special Interest
Group. I would also be grateful if you would forward this invitation
on to other members of your societies/discipline.
Please send your expression
of interest to my personal assistant, Ms. Kim Ng, Kim.Ng@mh.org.au

Glucocorticoids - inconsistent, incomplete and unsafe Consumer Medical
Information (CMI) persists
A paper submitted to the Australian Prescriber in May 2008
on the problems with the Consumer Medical Information (CMI) for glucocorticoid
replacement
medication was later withdrawn after the journal adopted
some unusual editorial strategies to avoid publication.
ESA shares the concerns expressed by the authors of the article and is adopting
an advocacy role with various bodies involved with pharmaceutical regulation
in order to improve the quality of Product Information (PI) and CMI documents
related to drugs used in our specialty.
The paper, a summary of the current online CMI's and a summary of the interactions
with Australian Prescriber, are available in our Position
Statements section.

ESA Membership Fees Increasing
As reported in our April 2008 newsletter,
ESA's financial position has been affected by the turmoil in the markets
this
year and our investment portfolio has
decreased in
value.
We do not wish to decrease activities such
as awards and meetings, but we do need to
safeguard our viability. Council has therefore
decided that an increase in subscriptions is
appropriate.
A motion was put up at the 2008 AGM to increase subscription
fees incrementally over the next five years. The changes are in
line with
the fees of other societies, and the motion was accepted by members..
The new fees will be:
- Australian Full members -
$110.00 in 2009, then increasing $10 each year up to $150.
- Australian Student members -
$50 in 2009, then increasing $5 each year up to $70.
- Overseas members - $45
in 2009, then increasing $5 each year up to $65.

Type 1 Diabetes Opinion Leaders Group
The Endocrine Society
of Australia is being represented by A/Prof Maarten Kamp on the newly-formed
Type 1 Diabetes Opinion Leaders Group. Outcomes for people with Type
1 diabetes remain poor, and the group hopes to draw attention to this
less prevalent but highly complex type
of diabetes as well as inform future service development and policy
initiatives by publishing a consensus statement of issues affecting Australians
with
Type 1 diabetes.
The Type 1 Diabetes Network, a consumer-led health promotion charity,
has convened the group and is hosting a collaborative process to develop
the statement of issues, which will be launched at the joint diabetes
health professionals’ conferences (ADEA/ADS)
in August 2008.
