Invitation for suggestions for US Endocrine Society Scientific Program for 2010

From Iain Clarke and Ken Ho:

We are members of the Steering Committee of the Endocrine Society (USA) and this in capacity, we play an integral role in the formulation of the program content for the 2010 annual meeting of this Society. This also means that we are advocates for your field of interest as well and for Oz representation in the program.

We are inviting you to send to us suggestions for Symposia topics and speakers.

The next meeting of the Steering Committee is in early August, but we need suggestions for symposia by 24 July.

Ideally, a good symposium has the following characteristics:-

  1. Nominated speakers are members. This is not mandatory, but it is certainly a big plus when we need to argue for inclusion of an individual. It is more important for overseas speakers than for Americans. As an Australian, you still have time to join the Society if you wish to nominate either yourself or a colleague for a symposium speaker slot.
  2. There is consideration of gender balance and minority.
  3. Nominated speakers need to be at the front of the field with a good international profile.
  4. The symposium fits the ‘grid’. The grid is a predetermined pattern of program topics and as committee members, we need to adhere to this. Nevertheless, it is obvious that all fields of endocrinology are covered so any proposed symposium has a chance of being programmed.
  5. The symposium has to be cohesive, addressing a specific area of the discipline. A very clear theme is good and a catchy title is good.
  6. ‘Bench-to bedside’ Symposia tend to get viewed favourably however those that are pure basic or clinical are frequently featured if the content is strong.

Please give careful consideration to sending a prospective symposium to either of us. Chances of getting you on the program as a speaker are good if we have your help. There is no problem with nominating yourself as a speaker, but you will need to provide an outline for a full symposium (Chair and 3 topics/speakers). Do not include more than one person from a lab and please give a brief outline of reasons for inclusion of each speaker (with relevant references). A person cannot be nominated as a speaker if he/she has been a speaker in the last 3 years.

Please help us get you and/or yours on the program of Endoc Soc, 2010.

Sincerely
Iain and Ken
