ESA
Clinical Weekend 2003
The ESA Clinical Weekend was held on 12-14 September
at Erskine Resort
on the Beach, Lorne. Thirteen cases on the themes
of andrology, adrenal/
pituitary disease and thyroid disease themes were
presented by advanced
trainees from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide,
and Perth. Fred Wu from Manchester was the principal
discussant in the andrology session and Terry Davies
from New York delivered a lecture on the clinical
role of thyroid receptor antibodies in the management
of thyroid disease. The meeting complied with RACP
workshop guidelines [2 MOPS points/hour].
One
hundred and thirty delegates attended, of whom
82 completed a short feedback form rating the success
of the meeting in achieving their educational objectives.
Of the 82 giving feedback, 39 were endocrinologists,
30 were advanced trainees, 7 were endocrine nurses,
and 6 others. The meeting overall was rated excellent
by 40%, very good by 49% and good by the remaining
11%. The rating of individual sessions was similar.
It was noted that this has become a
key conference for endocrine nurses who have no formal
training program and it was suggested that units
should facilitate the attendance of endocrine nurses.
Some concerns were raised by a few attendees relating
to the venue. These issues will be conveyed to the
conference organizer and to the venue staff.Financially
the meeting recorded a slight positive balance in
accordance with its target. Overall the meeting was
felt to have been a success in achieving its objectives
and to be providing a valuable adjunct to the main scientific meeting of
the Society.
The organizing committee would like to record its
thanks to the professional
conference organizer Australian Science Network,
in particular Mike Pickford and Sheridan Wright, for the friendly and
expert management.
